6. Meditation

Qn: All teachers advise to meditate. What is the purpose?

Ans: We know the outer world of sensations and actions but of our inner world of thoughts and feelings, we know little. Meditation is to become conscious of and familiar with our inner life.

Purpose is to reach source of life and consciousness. The practice affects deeply our character. We are slaves of what we do not know. Masters of what we know.

We discover our weakness and vices, their cause and workings. The unconscious dissolves when brought into the conscious.

Qn: What is the use of a quiet mind?

Ans: We come to know ourselves as the pure mind, withdraw from the experience and experiencer in pure awareness. Personality, "I am this or that", continues, but its identification with the witness snaps.

Qn: Energy flows outwards. Does not meditation dam up energies on higher levels?

Ans: It is not levels as of Gunas(qualities). Meditation is a Sattvic activity, eliminates Tamas(inertia), Rajas(motivity) and perfect Sattva(harmony).

Sattva is pure and strong like Sun. Truth, goodness, harmony, beauty are their own goals.

Qn: How to deal with tamas and rajas?

Ans: Watch their influence, lessen their grip. Earnestness is the only condition of success.
